Oh yeah, I'm stunned by the way they can take three 7's and an 8 at make it sit that well. The trouble with "musical convention" is that there are as many opinions on it as there are copyists! In my experience 4/8 is a rarely used, usually as "odd bars" alongside a more usual compound time signature. Most copyists would use 4/4 instead of 4/8 for ease of reading. Again in this case, splitting 29/4 into 3 bars of 7/4 and 2 bars of 4/4 would be the way to write it for ease of reading.

Well, I know about simple and compound meters, I'm a student in music college. Of course I believe I made the comment quite some time ago, so I may have been incorrect. However, a time signature with an 8 in the denominator doesn't necessarily have to be compound, for instance 4/8. Looking back I'd rather not take a stance on what meter this particular song, because there are multiple choices the songwriter could have taken. But regardless I appreciate the use of odd meter.

Sorry Ken, I think your music snobbery has led you up the wrong path in this case - again no offence intended. Tempos expressed in 8 usually indicate "compound" time where 1/8th notes are grouped in threes (6/8 = 2 groups of 3) so a bar of 4/4 (4 groups of two) is played very differently to a bar of 8/8 (where the 1/8 notes are grouped in any combination of 3,3,2). Despite the odd time signature, this particular song undoubtedly has 1/8th notes grouped in pairs so should be described in 29/4.

Thanks for posting....I've been a huge Alchemy fan since Webb and Carmichael got together. Once Nick Webb passed, I lost touch with the band as I felt he was the heart and soul of Alchemy. Some of the best "clear your head" music ever put out was by these two gentlemen.

This is one of my favorite Alchemy songs. It just grooves real tight! Love it!

Their music touches my soule the way any really good Jazz music should. The band is so tight it's hard to believe they're playing live. Just absolutely incredible.
