The putative origin of "hip" as a reference to the customary position for smoking opium is an urban myth. "Hip" -- meaning "aware, in the know, currently fashionable" -- is related to "hep" (as in hepster and hepcat), a slang term popularly associated with jazz and swing musicians of the 1940s but actually going as far back as 1908.And yes, "Sugar Shack" is an innocent, fun little song that brings back pleasant childhood memories -- even if Jimmy Gilmer did mispronounce "espresso."

scotpee , you're a great historian but how the hell did THIS get into the lovely sugar shack?? HIP evolved from "they who lay on their hip to smoke opium" and later was taken over by the press into "hippie" and became.....why did i bother to reply??? dunno..i must be bored or nuts

A fun little song -- but he mispronounced "espresso" as "EXpresso."Oh, well. Picky, picky, picky.

Technically there weren't any hippies until 1967 -- the Summer of Love. Your 1965 bohemian types might have been proto-hippies, or late-model beatniks.
